The Head of the Department is Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Stativka Olena Oleksandrivna

The Department of Foreign Languages was founded on 1 July 1992. For 26 years, it was headed by the Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Oleksandr Levashov. Since February 2019, the department has been headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Olena Stativka. From November 2021, the department is a structural unit of the Faculty No. 4.

The academic staff of the department consists of 13 employees, including 7 Candidates of Sciences and 5 Associate Professors, who teach students, cadets and trainees studying at the university on the faculties 1-6 in all specialities. The department is responsible for 5 disciplines: full-time cadets and students and part-time students study "Foreign Language" and "Foreign Language for Professional Purposes", master's students study "Foreign Language in Professional Purposes", "Foreign Language for Researchers", and adjuncts and postgraduate students study "Foreign Language in the Field of Research".

The priority is given to active teaching methods aimed at developing students' and cadets' independence, variability, creativity, and critical thinking. In 2019, the Language Centre was opened at the Department of Foreign Languages to intensify teaching and introduce innovative technologies, which includes: a conference room equipped with an interactive Smart Board for trainings, seminars, scientific club meetings, round tables and teleconferences; 2 classrooms equipped with laptops and a projector for practical classes using interactive technologies; a computer lingo room for independent work.

The main areas of the Department's research are: linguistic, methodological and pedagogical principles for interrelated teaching of various types of speech activities, ways to replenish the vocabulary of the language, psycholinguistic aspects of improving the effectiveness of foreign language teaching, improvement of professionally oriented and independent foreign language training as a factor for improving the efficiency of law enforcement officers.

Since the establishment of the department, the academic staff has published more than 1000 scientific articles and abstracts for scientific conferences, seminars and round tables, more than 30 teaching and methodological manuals, namely: "English for police officers", "Computers through English", "English for psychologists", "Grammar resource book", "Combating economic crime", "Human trafficking counteraction", "Combating cybercrime", "English for future masters", "Methodological recommendations for writing an academic research paper", English grammar textbook for self-study of cadets and students of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, “Basic Grammar” (Part 1 and 2), “30 years of experience in teaching law enforcement officers in foreign languages”, etc.

There is a cadet-student scientific club at the Department of Foreign Languages of the Faculty No. 4 of KhNUIA, headed by the senior lecturer of the Department T. Kalchenko. The purpose of the cadet-student scientific club is to involve participants in research activities, scientific and practical events and competitions, create conditions for creative growth in the learning process and mastery of the speciality for future professional activities, career growth and improvement of language training. The research work of the Foreign Languages Department's cadets is distinguished by the fact that all activities are performed exclusively in a foreign language.

Traditionally, an international student scientific and practical conference in foreign languages has been held in April for 25 years in a row. While preparing reports, the cadets study the experience of foreign law enforcement agencies during and after military conflicts, which is very useful and will help to organise the work to ensure law and order and security of citizens, protection of their rights and freedoms under martial law. The members of the scientific club also participate in other international scientific and practical conferences, Ukrainian inter-university conferences and competitions, scientific and methodological seminars and round tables.

Under the leadership of the Associate Professor of the Department V. Kochina, in 2023, the language training project "A way to Europe" was launched at the University for in-depth study of English. The project is focused on learning English using the innovative method of blended learning.

Significant attention is also paid to the professional development of teachers and their professional self-improvement. The academic staff of the department regularly participates in scientific and methodological seminars, round tables, and undergoes internships at distance learning courses both in Ukraine and abroad, which are confirmed by the relevant certificates.

The academic staff of the department develops new pedagogical ideas and practices, implements the achievements of the best world pedagogical experience, which contributes to the development of ways and methods of improving the quality of cadets' and masters' knowledge, and new forms of education, together with the digitalisation of the educational process, increase the motivation to learn foreign languages.
