The First International Scientific and Practical Conference “Ukrainian Army: Modernity and Historical Retrospective” took place online at the National Defense University of Ukraine named after Ivan Cherniakhovskyi. The event was organized by the National Defense University of Ukraine, the Institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv Orthodox Theological Academy, National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War, National Museum of Ukrainian History, National Military History Museum of Ukraine, State Aviation Museum of Ukraine and International Non-Governmental Organization “Olive Branch”.

The Minister of Defense of Ukraine Andrii Taran greeted the participants of the conference, he noted that the desire to join the North Atlantic Alliance requires mastering NATO standards, and the results will be an important step in intellectually supporting Ukraine’s defenders and strengthening the country’s defense capabilities. An Academician-Secretary of the Department of History, Philosophy and Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Director of the Institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Academician Valerii Smolii; representatives of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces; Caroline Grube (USA), Director of Women’s Affairs at Olive Branch International Organization also made welcoming speeches

More than 200 researchers of military history from the North Atlantic Alliance, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the General Staff of Ukrainian Armed Forces, staff of the security and defense sector and Regions of Ukraine attended the conference. The discussion took place in three discussion rooms: experience in application of security and defense forces in the Joint Forces operation (anti-terrorist operation), historical experience in training specialists for the security and defense sector, Ukraine’s participation in peacekeeping and security operations; Ukrainian revolution of 1917-1921: military-historical aspect, Ukraine and Ukrainians in the vortex of the Second World War, armed defense of Ukrainian lands from antiquity to the beginning of the XXI century; Pastoral care in the Ukrainian army and the phenomenon of the volunteer movement: experience, problems and prospects.

Lecturers of the Department of Social and Humanitarian Disciplines of the Faculty No. 6, namely Associate Professor, Candidate of Historical Sciences Vitalii Zaborovskyi and Senior Lecturer, Candidate of Philology Nataliia Kobylko attended the conference for the invitation received by Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs. They made a report on “Images of Ukrainian soldiers-defenders in painting”.

Based on the materials of the conference, a program and a collection of abstracts were prepared.
