Nadiya Demydenko, Head of the Department of Humanities at Sumy Branch of Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs, took part in the All-Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Conference dedicated to the memory of prominent Ukrainian scientists who made great contributions to Ukrainian and world science and culture in the first half of the 20th century. It was about the legendary family of the Tymoshenko brothers, natives of the village of Bazylivka, Chernihiv province (now Konotop district, Sumy region) - Stepan Tymoshenko (1878–1972), Serhii Tymoshenko (1881–1950) and Volodymyr Tymoshenko (1885–1965).
It was noted at the conference that in the autumn of 1918 Stepan Tymoshenko headed the Institute of Technical Mechanics (now the S.P. Tymoshenko Institute of Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). In 1920 he was forced to emigrate abroad, becoming the founder of the School of Applied Mechanics in the United States. His brother, Serhii Tymoshenko, was the founder of the Architectural Institute in Kyiv, and worked as the Minister of Roads in the governments of the Ukrainian People's Republic in 1919–1920. In 1918, he served as the provincial commissioner of Kharkiv region. Engaged in political activity, he did not leave the architectural business, creating projects of buildings in the style of Ukrainian modernism, national romanticism. The younger of the brothers, Volodymyr is an economist, worked in the US government under President Roosevelt.
Although the Tymoshenko family was not destined to create in their native land, they worthily represented it in the near and far worlds.
The conference participants proposed to install a memorial plaque dedicated to the Tymoshenko family in their small homeland. Moreover, according to the Resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine "On the celebration of memorable dates and anniversaries in 2021" at the state level will be celebrated the 140th anniversary of Serhii Tymoshenko.
