The Department of Language Training (formerly known as the Department of Foreign Languages) was founded on 1 July 1992, and since June 2024 it has become an independent structural unit of the University due to organisational and staff changes at Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs.
The department was headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Oleksandr Levashov for 26 years. Since February 2019, the Department has been headed by Olena Stativka, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor.
In 2019, the Language Centre was opened at the Department of Language Training to intensify teaching and implement innovative technologies.
Since the establishment of the department, the academic staff has published more than 1300 scientific articles and abstracts for scientific conferences, seminars and round tables, more than 40 training manuals and methodological recommendations.
The department has been certified for more than 10 years, and during this period, Associate Professor Pochuieva V.V., Senior Lecturer Korshenko A.E. and Lecturer Bezsmertna S.V. were sent on several mission trips to Kosovo, East Timor and Liberia within the international peacekeeping forces. Their professionalism in the performance of their duties, including the provision of humanitarian aid, was highly appreciated by the UN and was also recognised by the University.
For many years, the department has provided teaching of 3 foreign languages: English, German and French. A special faculty with in-depth study of foreign languages held classes in these languages, 2 of which were compulsory. Due to the cadets' perfect command of foreign languages, some disciplines, such as International Law, were taught in English. Many of the University's graduates participated in UN peacekeeping activities as representatives of Ukraine in various countries around the world: Kosovo, Sudan, East Timor, Liberia, and Côte d'Ivoire.
Traditionally, the International Scientific and Practical Conference in foreign languages for educatees has been held in April for over 26 years in a row. When preparing reports, cadets study the experience of foreign countries, which is useful and helps to effectively organise work to ensure law and order and security of citizens, protection of their rights and freedoms, especially in the conditions of the martial law regime.
The Department pays considerable attention to the research work of cadets and students. There is a scientific club for cadets and students; its members participate in international, national, inter-university scientific and practical conferences, scientific and methodological seminars, round tables, competitions, and оlympiads. Active participants are awarded commendations, diplomas and certificates of the University, other higher education institutions and international organisations. A distinguishing feature of the research work of the members of the department's extracurricular scientific club is that all events are held exclusively in a foreign language. The head of the department is Assistant Professor of the Department, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor V.V. Kochyna.
