Andrii Prokhorov, Specialist of the Department of Social and Humanitarian Disciplines prepared and conducted a museum online lecture on the occasion of the famous Italian scientist Cesare Lombroso’s (November 6, 1935 - October 19, 1909) anniversary. The lecture was attended by students-psychologists together with Alla Larionova, Associate Professor of the Department of Sociology and Psychology.
Cesare Lombroso’s controversial scientific work dedicated to the search for the sources of criminal behavior still arouses interest not only in professional circles but also in the general public. His scientific legacy includes themes of genius and madness, features of female and political crime and terrorism, typology of professional criminals, biological and social factors of crime.
The museum lecture was based on a prepared presentation, during which students learned interesting details from the scientist's biography, largely explaining the origins of his scientific activity. Video fragments of the bright feature films – “The Professor and the Madman” (2019) and “Heart of a Dog” (1988) were used to illustrate certain themes. There was also a virtual acquaintance with some of the exhibits of the Cesare Lombroso’s Museum of Criminal Anthropology. The museum was renovated at the University of Turin in 2009. It is accessible to the general public.
It was Cesare Lombroso who proposed to use a polygraph, the involvement of specialists in psychiatry and sociology in the criminal process, argued the social hygiene necessity. Many of the raised issues are still relevant, therefore, acquaintance with his works is not only a tribute to the memory and history of science.
