A Legal Clinic of Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs has been opened in the Palace of Culture of the Headquarters of the National Police in Kharkiv Region. Free legal assistance to citizens will be provided by university cadets and students under the supervision of curators-lecturers who provide methodological and theoretical maintenance of the legal clinic activity.
The event was attended by Valerii Sokurenko, Rector of the University, Police General of the third rank, Serhii Chyzh, Deputy Head - Head of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Headquarters of the National Police in Kharkiv Region, Police Colonel, Oksana Brusakova, a Dean of the Faculty No. 6, Ella Vakulovych, Assistant Professor of the Department of Civil Law and Proceedings of the Faculty No. 6, Curator of Legal Clinic.
As Valerii Sokurenko, the Rector of the University said: “the work of the Legal Clinic is aimed at providing free legal assistance to citizens, especially those who are referred to the vulnerable population. We want to help people, and we have such an opportunity – non-indifferent lecturers, the non-permanent staff, that want to do it. This will increase public confidence in the police, it will contribute to the positive image of both the university in particular and the Ministry of Internal Affairs in general”. For cadets and students, the work in the clinic is a perfect opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in practice and to gain invaluable practical experience. As Serhii Chyzh, Deputy Head of the Headquarters of the National Police in Kharkiv Region, said: today’s cadets are future investigators, the staff of operation units, inspectors of preventive activity units. Working in the clinic, they learn to communicate with the population, understand their problems and provide qualified answers in accordance with the legislation in force. The gained experience will help them during their duties in practical units.
The Legal Clinic of the university was founded in 2012, it is located within the territory of the educational establishment. The clinic, which was opened today in the center of Kharkiv, is the second one. It also works on a volunteer basis, assisting the public on a wide range of issues in various branches of the law. These are verbal and written consultations, the preparation of legal and other applications to the courts, complaints, petitions and written communications to officials and citizens, etc. Currently, the Law Clinic employs 26 consultants from among students and cadets of the university. During the opening, the rector of the university and the deputy head of Kharkiv Police talked to them and gave them useful advice.
