Solemn events on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Chornobyl accident took place at Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs. The event was attended by Rector Valerii Sokurenko, First Vice-Rector Dmytro Shvets, Vice-Rectors Serhii Bortnyk, Mykhailo Burdin, Leonid Mohilevskyi, Anatolii Klochko, and university staff.
The audience observed a minute of silence in memory of the heroes who died during the liquidation of the accident at the nuclear power plant and laid flowers at the monument to the liquidators of the Chornobyl accident. As the rector of the university Valerii Sokurenko noted in his speech, a terrible tragedy still keeps humanity in suspense. "On April 26, there was an explosion at the fourth power unit of the nuclear power plant, and the world found out about it only on May 2. The servicemen and law enforcement officers were among the first to join the fight against the destructive atom. Thanks to the courage and heroism of the liquidators managed to localize the trouble. We will always remember the feat of those who defended the world and each of us," Valerii Sokurenko stressed.
The university staff joined the action initiated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, transferring one-day earnings in support of the liquidators of the Chornobyl tragedy. "We must always treat them with honor and respect, they deserve it," said Valerii Sokurenko.
