The Annual Inter-University School on Human Rights is a well-known platform for Ukrainian law students and young legal practitioners to increase their knowledge about international and European human rights law issues. This year online School will focus on the problems of safety of journalists, freedom of association (Articles 10 and 11 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms), positive and negative obligations to investigate crimes against media actors, as well as measures to protect safety (including digital) of journalists, journalistic sources, surveillance of data.

The first phase of the training session (12 April – 07 May 2021) will comprise of a series of 12 lectures and 4 interactive discussions on issues within the ambit of the topics of the School. The second phase of the school (10 May – 14 May 2021) will comprise of a five-day online training for selected participants that took part in the first phase of the training. During online sessions, participants will learn from prominent international and Ukrainian human rights law experts about the latest developments and international standards in rights for free speech and freedom of association. The school will also cover some aspects of the execution of judgments under Article 46 of the Convention. Each day students will have exchange and reflection sessions over the Ukrainian context versus the European and international human rights standards, primarily when referring to and analysing practical examples of Maidan events and cases in Ukraine. The last day will be designated to a "moot trial procedure" with the European Court of Human Rights Registry and the Supreme Court of Ukraine's support.

Application and entry requirements:

  • master and Ph.D. level law students of Ukrainian Universities and cadets of Universities of Internal Affairs, legal professionals and employees of state institutions at the start of their careers are invited to participate in the School. International students who meet these criteria could also apply;
  • excellent command of English;
