International Gender Quest

What:

International online competition on gender issues for teams of students/cadets representing police academies, universities for civil security or defense

Organisers:

  • Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs

with support from Kateryna Levchenko, Government Commissioner for Gender Policy of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs

  • European Union Advisory Mission (EUAM)

Competing teams:

Gender balanced teams of 5 students each can join the online Gender Quest

Themes:

  • Exciting and fun ways to overcome gender stereotypes in security and defense sector

Showcasing progress on gender issues at your academy/university.

What to do in the Gender Quest:

  • Registration of the team
  • Making 1 short video (maximum 3 minutes) and uploading it to a designated YouTube channel
  • Presenting your team (during an online stream)
  • Solving cases and puzzles with your team (during an online stream)
  • Awaiting the results of the jury to see if you have won

Language:

English (subtitles in other languages allowed)

Background:

Equal participation of all genders, encompassing women and men, in the security sector, combined with a gender perspective, contributes to more peaceful societies, where conflicts are better prevented and addressed. Simply because seeking inclusion and allowing for diversity gives all people a chance to be heard and to feel safe and protected. In the civil security sector, however, gender balance and gender equality is not yet a reality. Stereotypes are still around and progress on gender equality is moving slowly. The online Gender Quest is a way for future security agents (police, border guards, emergency workers, etc.) to explore the theme of gender and inclusion in a fun way. The overall aim is also to exchange good practices and explore interesting options to speed up gender equality in the security sector internationally.

Past Gender Quests:

Until date, the Gender Quest has been a successful competition in the Ukraine. Every year, more teams joined. In 2022, the Gender Quest will be open for international, EU based teams for the first time and some rules have been adjusted to make this possible. Check out about past Gender Quests here:

The jury:

The overall winning team will be selected by an international expert jury. In 2020, 2021, the jury was led by Kateryna Levchenko, Government Commissioner for Gender Policy of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. The expert jury will give scores for

  • Short video of up to 3 minutes (judged on creativity, relevance, substance)[1]
  • Team presentation (general impressions)
  • Solving situational tasks and tests (number of correct answers and speed)
