Yevhen Hrebinka was born on February 2, 1812 in the village of Ubizhyshche, Pyriatyn district (Poltava Region) in the family of a small landowner Pavel Hrebinka and his wife Nadiia Tchaikovska. The future writer's father was a Headquaters Captain of the Malorussia Cavalry Regiment, participated in the War of 1812, after his retirement employed himself in farming.
